Smokefree Texas, a coalition of public health organizations,
assists communities wishing to eliminate second hand smoke in public
places. Founded by the American Cancer Society, American Heart
Association and the American Lung Association, Smoke-free Texas
provides resources, information, and guidance to community coalitions
during the lengthy and sometimes controversial process of passing a
comprehensive clean indoor air ordinance. Why do groups like
the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and American
Lung Association support smoke-free public places? Secondhand
smoke is linked to cancer, heart disease and respiratory illness in
non-smokers. By reducing the public's exposure to secondhand smoke,
these groups know they will have a positive impact on public health.
Reducing secondhand smoke will reduce the instances of preventable
illness. Our Web site is a one-stop shop for resources that are current
and accurate. More importantly, we can provide assistance to you as you
begin to organize and educate your community around this important
public health issue.
Texas Coalitions:
From the Rio Grande Valley to Lubbock, and from El Paso to
Texarkana, community coalitions have worked to pass ordinances that
severely restrict exposure to secondhand smoke. Dozens of other
communities throughout the state are advocating for similar protections
and need your help. Is your community taking up the fight?
