According to the National Cancer Institute, secondhand smoke kills 53,000 non-smoking Americans yearly and is the third leading cause of preventable death. Moreover, secondhand smoke is a known cause of lung cancer, heart disease, low birth weight, chronic lung ailments (such as bronchitis and asthma) and other health problems. To address this health issue, Smoke-Free Texas was created to protect all workers from the dangers of secondhand smoke.
Currently, there are 24 states with comprehensive smoke-free ordinances and 12 other states considering smoke-free laws. Smoke-Free Texas is working with state leaders to introduce legislation next year in 2009 to have Texas join the ranks of others states that are smoke-free.
